Beam Plus Spring/Summer 2013
Japanese brands have proven time and time that they are one of the most dominant forces in the world of menswear. One of the factors which has propelled them to this position is their ability to avoid dilution, understanding that by working towards specific goals, with singular mindsets and by concentrating above all on quality they can produce outstanding results.
The Spring/Summer collection from Harajuku’s Beams Plus particularly exemplifies this. Drawing influence from their original collection and concentrating on producing quality pieces inspired by traditional American styles. Beams work to outfit four iconic American styles, Military, Workwear, Sports and Americana, seeking to reinterpret classic styles and maintain authentic details while ensuring that their designs, cuts and materials remain contemporary.

A main theme for the SS13 collection is the re-purposing of traditional relaxed tailoring, through the medium of print. Beams take the classic button down Oxford shirt and reproduce it in a number of eye catching prints including Camouflage and satisfyingly subtle Black Watch tartan maintaining high levels of tailoring including curved hems, trimmed gussets and box pleats. The classic three button blazer receives the same treatment, re-produced in paisley, tartan and notably seersucker reinforcing the brands obsession with Ivy League Americana.
Camouflage is a recurring theme, with the now ubiquitous print appearing on Bow Ties, Chinos and a 100% Japanese silk Handkerchief. Accessories are also well represented within the collection, with a selection of Fairisle socks made in Japan, military inspired watch straps and a particularly impressive handmade silk handkerchief in an all over navy Paisley.
Heritage styles of outerwear are reproduced in a range of innovate materials and cuts. The Mountain Parka is beams ode to the 1960’s Reversible short coat, constructed with a 60/40 blend to ensure protection from the elements but maintaining original details such as raglan sleeves and utilitarian pockets.
